The Gilbert Islands were declared a British protectorate in 1892. Banaba or Ocean Island was annexed in 1900.
In 1916 the British protectorates Gilbert Islands and Ellice Islands were merged to
form the British colony of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands. Fanning Island, Washington Island
and Tokelau were annexed, but Tokelau detached and placed under
New Zealand administration in 1926. The Phoenix Islands were
annexed in 1937, five of the Line Islands in 1972. In 1975 the Ellice Islands seoparated to form a separate colony (Tuvalu, independent 1976), the remainder as Kiribati gained independence in 1979. Timetable : Kiribati Historical Atlas, Kiribati Page |
