Marshall Islands Australia

Phosphate-rich island in the South Pacific. Annexed by Germany in 1888, and administrated as an annex to the Marshall Islands which Germany purchased from Spain in 1884. The exploration of the island's phosphate deposits began in 1906.
Early in World War I, the Marshall Islands were occupied by Japan while Nauru came under the occupation of Australia In 1920 Australia was awarded trusteeship, with Britain and New Zealand as co-trustees.
From 1942 to 1945 under Japanese occupation. From 1945 onward again under joint trusteeship of Australia, Britain and New Zealand. 1966 self-government, 1968 independence.
