The ancestors of the Maori arrived in New Zealand (Maori name Aotearoa) in the 13th century A.D. They
found a particular indigenous fauna, and soon drove the Moa and Harpagus (two large birds) to extinction. The first European navigator to visit the island was V.O.C. employee Abel Tasman; he named New Zealand after the Dutch province of Zeeland. The Maori population was affected by bthe introduction of the potato, infectious diseases, and by firearms (Musket Wars 1807-1839). The first Europeans settled in New Zealand. In 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed and Britain proclaimed sovereignty over New Zealand. Initially administrated as part of New South Wales, in 1841 it was declared a separate colony. The NZ parliament first assembled in 1854; the colony governed itself from 1856, the year in which the first prime minister was appointed. In 1893 New Zealand granted women the right to vote. In 1907 New Zealand's status was upgraded from colony to dominion. 1931 the dominions were granted full sovereignty. New Zealand acquired the Cook Islands in 1901, Niue in 1901, Western Samoa in 1914 (until 1962), Tokelau in 1926. Timeline : New Zealand |
