Norfolk Island in the 14th or 15th century was settled by East Polynesians; the island population went extinct several generations
later. The island was discovered by James Cook in 1774, who named it. Because the uninhabited island offered a supply in flax and timber, it was included in the 1786 plan to colonize New South Wales. From 1788 to 1814 and from 1825 to 1855 it was used as a penal colony. In 1856 settlers from Pitcairn arrived. From 1788 to 1844 Norfolk Island was under New South Wales; from 1844 to 1856 under Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania); from 1856 onward a separate territory.
