Federated States of
Micronesia
First posted on July 9th 2002, last revised on October 29th 2010

Settled c.4000 years ago. Claimed by Spain since discovery. Following defeat in the Spanish-American War, Spain sold her claims to the Caroline Islands (present-day Micronesia), including the Palau Islands, to Germany in 1899. From 1914 to 1945 the Caroline Islands with Palau were under Japanese administration, afterward under U.S. administration, from 1947 onward as Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (Caroline Islands with Palau, Marshall Islands, Northern Mariana Islands). When several islands moved to form the Federated Micronesian State in 1979, Palau did not join. The Republic of Palau was formed in 1981, political independence achieved in 1994.

In 19th century sources referred to as Islas Palaos, Islas Palos or Pelew Islands, in modern sources as Palau or Belau.
