Pitcairn was first settled by Polynesians in the 11th century; this settlement was extinct by the 15th century.
In 1790 the island was again settled by a group consisting of the mutineers of the Bounty and of Tahitians.
The island settlement remained cut off from the rest of the world until 1808; in 1814 a ship of the Royal Navy
landed and found the settlement. In 1838 Pitcairn was declared a British colony. In 1970 Pitcairn was placed
under the British High Commissioner of New Zealand. Timeline : Pitcairn |
