In 1919 Germany was deprived of her colonies. The League of Nations granted the mandate over former German New Guinea, now referred to as North-east New Guinea, to Australia, which already administrated British New Guinea. From 1919 to 1975 both territories were separately administered by Australia; in 1975 the islands became independent as Papua New Guinea (Papua Niugini).
Bougainville fought a campaign for independence in 1975-1976 and in 1997 was granted political autonomy.
