Dates for the arrival of the first settlers, Polynesians, range between 300 and 700 AD. The first European navigator to visit the island was Dutchman Jakob Roggeveen in 1722; he gave it the name "Easter Island". The first missionary arrived in 1864. In 1888, Rapa Nui was annexed by Chile, and refered to as Isla de Pasqua. Timeline : Rapa Nui
