Fiji Western Samoa
First posted in May 2002, last revised on October 25th 2010





First settled between 1500 and 1000 B.C.; first contact with Europeans in 1616. In western sources, far into the 19th century, Tonga was referred to as the Friendly Islands. At the time of the "discovery" by Europeans politically fragmented, Tonga was united in 1845. British protectorate established in 1900; independence declared in 1970.
