Tuvalu, under the name of Ellice Islands, was declared a British protectorate in 1892.
In 1916 it was joined with the Gilbert Islands to form
Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony.
In 1974 the Ellice Islands were formed into a separate colony, which in 1975 became
