Solomon Islands New Caledonia
First posted in May 2002, last revised on October 30th 2010

First contact with Europeans in 1606; in 1774 James Cook gave islands the name "New Hebrides". 1906-1980 Anglo-French condominium. In 1980 released into independence as Vanuatu.
