Tokelau Islands American Samoa
First posted in May 2002, last revised on October 25th 2010

The Tripartite Convention 1899 (Britain, Germany, U.S.A.) allocated Tonga and Niue to Britain, while Samoa was partitioned by Germany (Western Samoa) and the U.S.A. (American Samoa).
German rule was terminated in World War I, when the islands were occupied by New Zealand forces; from 1919 to 1962 they were under New Zealand administration. Independence was achieved under the name of Western Samoa in 1962. In 2002 the country's name was changed from Western Samoa to Samoa.
