History and Administrative Division . In 1920 the Chuvash Autonomous Oblast was formed, from territory previously belonging to Kazan Gubernia and Simbirsk Gubernia. In 1925 Chuvash AO was elevated to Chuvash ASSR. When Nizhny Novgorod Territory was formed in 1929, the Chuvash ASSR became part of it, but was separated again in 1936. In 1992 the Chuvash ASSR was reorganized as Chuvashia Republic (within the Russian Federation). The capital is Cheboksary.
In 2008, Chuvashia bordered on Mari El in the north, on Tatarstan in the east, on Ulyanovsk Oblast in the south, on Mordovia and Nizhny Novgorod Oblast in the west. Chuvashia has 21 districts : Alatyrsky, Alikovsky, Batyrevsky, Cheboksarsky, Ibresinsky, Kanashsky, Komsomolsky, Kozlovsky, Krasnoarmeysky, Krasnochetaysky, Mari-Tureksky, Morgaushsky, Poretsky, Shemurshinsky, Shumerlinsky, Tsivilsky, Urmarsky, Vumarsky, Yadrinsky, Yalchiksky, Yantikovsky.

Population . The population was1,078,000 in 1939, 1,098,000 in 1959, 1,293,000 in 1979, 1,336,000 in 1989, 1,354,000 in 2001 (Jan Lahmeyer).
