History and Administrative Division . A larger Nizhny Novgorod Oblast was established in 1929, comprising of Nizhny Novgorod and Vyatka Gubernia, of Mari El, Votsk (Udmurt) and Chuvash ASSRs (Mordovia was still part of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, achieved ASSR status in 1930). Nizhny Novgorod Oblast in 1932 was reorganized as Gorky Kray; in 1934 Kirov Oblast (with the Udmurt ASSR), in 1936 the Chuvash ASSR, Mari ASSR, Mordovian ASSR were separated from Gorky Kray, the remnant reorganized as Gorky Oblast.
