History and Administrative Division . In 1934 Stalngrad Kray was formed. In 1936 Stalingrad Oblast was formed. In 1954 Balashov Oblast was established, in part carved out of Stalingrad Oblast (Uryupinsky, Nekhaevsky, Alekseevsky, Podtelkovsky, Novoanninsky, Novonikolaevsky, Kikvidzensky, Elansky, Rudnyansky, Zhirnovsky Districts),. In 1957 Balashov Oblast was dissolved, part of its territory (Uryupinsky, Nekhaevsky, Alekseevsky, Podtelkovsky, Novoanninsky, Novonikolaevsky, Kikvidzensky, Elansky, Rudnyansky, Zhirnovsky Districts), reintegrated into Stalingrad Oblast. In 1961 Stalingrad Oblast was renamed Volgograd Oblast.
