The Votsk Autonomous Region was proclaimed in 1920, mainly from territory formerly belonging to Vyatka Gubernia; in 1934 it was renamed and elevated to Udmurt ASSR. In 1990 it reorganized itself as Republic of Udmurtia (within the Russian Federation).
Presently, the Udmurt Republic borders on Kirov Oblast and in the North, on in the East, on the Republics of Bashkortostan and Tatarstan in the South and on Kirov Oblast in the West.
