Argentina 1870-1918

In the 1880es Argentina defeated the MAPUCHE amnd ARAUCAN Indios and established it's claim on PATAGONIA. Under President JULIO ARGENTINO ROCA, Argentine's economy flourished, as refigeration technology made meat export possible; the other dominant export crop being grain. Immigration from Europe (predominantly from Italy) picked up. Economic ties with Britain, the main consumer of Argentinian meat, intensified as Britons were also the main foreign investors in the country. The railway network developed.
In 1895, Argentina had a population of 3,945,911, 1,004,527 of whom were foreign nationals, to 49 % Italians, 19 % Spaniards.
A border dispute with Chile (1902) was solved peacefully. In 1904, an Argentinian expedition raised the nation's flag on the SOUTH ORKNEY ISLANDS (also claimed by Britain). During World War I, Argentina stayed neutral.
