Argentina 1918-1945

Argentina joined the LEAGUE OF NATIONS in 1920, but remained an inactive member until 1933.
Immediately after World War I Argentina was regarded a rich country and a stable democracy. This began to change in 1930 with President HIPOLITO IRIGUYEN being ousted. The dominant conservative party was sympathetic to the fascist states in Europe. Argentina's position during much of World War II was described as pro-Axis neutrality; in March 1945 Argentina declared war on Germany, pro forma, without dispatching troops.
Aided in their flight from Europe, a number of high Nazi figures ended up in Argentina, which provided a safe haven. Notorious concentration camp doctor JOSEF MENGELE and ADOLF EICHMANN, the man responsible for the organization of the Holocaust, were the most prominent among them.
In 1927 Argentina introduced the registration of motor vehicles.

In the years between the wars, the cultural ties between Argentina, Europe and the United States had strengthened. The TANGO became fashionable in Europe, Argentinian JUAN MANUEL FANGIO rose to international fame as he won the car racing world championship and in 1930 Argentina reached the final in the world's first soccer world cup, defeated by neighbouring Uruguay 4-2.
