1983-1991

Argentina since 1991

In 1992 the new Argentine Peso was introduced, at 1:10,000 against the outgoing Austral. Moreover, the new Peso was tied to the US Dollar at par. Currency exchange restrictions were lifted. This parity was kept up until 2001. Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina formed a Latin American common market, referred to as MERCOSUR. Argentina finally had a stable currency; however, unemployment rates soared.
In 2000, Argentina was struck by the foot-and-mouth disease which affected the country's beef exports. In 2001-2002 Argentina experienced a severe economic crisis; the pegging of the Peso to the Dollar was abandoned, the Peso devalued. Strict economic discipline enforced on Argentina by the IMF resulted in cuts in social spending, which in turn created a volatile political environment. The elections of 2003 were won by Peronist Nestor Kirchner, who is critical of neoliberalism and free market policy.
