After World War II, some nations unilaterally extended their sovereignty over segments of sea (fishery) / ocean floor (mineral deposits) within a distance of 200 nautical miles from the coast. This highly increased the strategic value of islands located far from any coast, such as it was the case with the South Atlantic islands.
A 1961 volcanic eruption on Tristan da Cunha destroyed the island's crayfish cannery, which was rebuilt shortly afterward. In 1967, Radio St. Helena began broadcasting.
