Uruguay 1814-1830

Almirante Brown's defeat of the Spanish fleet in 1814 caused the surrender of the Spanish garrison of Montevideo. Resisting Argentinian occupation, Uruguayan patriot JOSE ARTIGAS went into exile to Paraguay rather than to surrender.
Uruguay - in those years referred to as BANDA ORIENTAL - now was to form part of the UNITED PROVINCES OF LA PLATA. However, the new federal republic found itself paralyzed by numerous regions and their strongmen unwilling to surrender political authority to the central administration.
The Portuguese took advantage and invaded in 1816, without success. In 1821 Brazil declared independence and annexed Uruguay, or, as they called it, the PROVINCIA CISPLATINA. In 1825, Uruguayan patriots revolted against Brazilian rule in FLORIDA (Uru.). JUAN ANTONIO LAVALLEJA declared the country's independence (1825), under the name of REPUBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY (= Republic to the East of the Uruguay River). With the aid of La Platan troops, the Brazilians were defeated in the BATTLE OF ITUZAINGO 1827. Technically a part of the United Provinces of La Plata, which continued to be in disarray,
Independence declared and the enemy defeated, Uruguay yet lacked political organization.
