The former Spanish Viceroyalty of New Granada in 1819 established factual independence from Spain in 1819 (although the struggle for independence continued until 1824/1826). It roughly covered the territory of modern Colombia, Ecuadorm Venezuela and Panama, as well as parts of modern Peru. A dispute over the form of government resulted in the secession of Ecuador and Venezuela in 1830; the remainder in 1831 took on the new name of Republic of New Granada (1831-1863).

A number of contemporary sources continue to apply the name "New Granada" when refering to Gran Colombia.
