From 1536 to 1776, the La Plata region was administratively part of the Viceroyalty of Peru (Lima). During much of this
period, it was neglected by the Spanish administration in Madrid and Lima, both of whom focussed their attention on
the mining operations in the Andes.
In the 18th century, the Bourbon Reforms improved conditions for the La Plata region by first permitting Spanish ships
to directly sail to the La Plata, and then by establishing the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata in 1776.
Warfare between Britain and Spain 1780-1783 and again,
with interruptions, 1795-1814, resulted in communication between
Spain and the Viceroyalty being strained, and facilitated the emergence of an independence movement (1810); by 1816
independence from Spain was achieved.
In the subsequent years, the United Provinces of Rio de la Plata disintegrated, with Argentina,
Paraguay, Bolivia and Uruguay
emerging as main successor states, while Chile,
Brazil and the United Kingdom (Falkland Islands)
annexed territory once claimed by the Viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata.
