Denmark 1949-1969

Denmark's economy profited from the MARSHALL PLAN (1948ff). The country in 1949 became founding member of NATO. In 1960, Denmark together with the United Kingdom, Ireland, Austria, Sweden and Finland founded EFTA, a free trade organisation without a political programme.
In 1953 the constitution was changed, the Landsting abolished, a unicameral system introduced. A NATIONAL PENSION SCHEME was passed in 1956, a SICKNESS COMPENSATION SCHEME in 1960, DISABLEMENT INSURANCE introduced in 1965, unemployment benefits raised in 1970. Denmark became a WELFARE STATE.
In the 1950es and 1960es, Denmark's economy boomed, factories like LEGO gaining a reputation worldwide, as did Danish dairy products and furniture.
When the UN Security Council called the member nations to support invaded South Korea, Denmark dispatched hospital ship JUTLANDIA, which served in Korean waters.
Denmark liberalized its censorship regulations; pornographic magazines (in the early 1960es still prohibited in the nations of central Europe) became a much-smuggled article.
