Denmark 1949-1969 since 1990

Denmark 1969-1990

In 1979 Greenland was granted political autonomy. When the Soviet Union showed signs of breaking up, the Danish government was the first to recognize the independence of Lithuania (in 1991).
In 1973 Denmark left EFTA and joined the EEC (now EU). The Danish economy was hit by the Oil Crisis. Unlike other European nations, Denmark decided not to use nuclear energy; instead they promoted small wind energy generators. Denmark's governments was later to ask Sweden to shut down its nuclear power stations on the Sound. Denmark would also promote battery-powered cars.
In Denmark, hippie generation students, similar to those of Amsterdam, occupied empty, decaying houses, many of which in Christianshavn, a suburb of Copenhagen, which they declared a "free state". Denmark was reluctant to use its police.
The 1970es saw the apperance of new political parties, such as the Progess Party, lead by maverick Mogens Glistrup, who openly advocated the abolition of income taxation, and the Greens.
