Denmark's Contribution during the Korean War : the Jutlandia

Stamps issued in 1951 in commemoration of the Danish hospital ship Jutlandia serving in the Korean War, by Denmark (left) and by the Republic of Korea (right)

The Korean war began with North Korean forces crossing the 38th parallel into South Korea on June 25th 1950. The United Nations Security Council condemned the invasion and called on it's member states to come to the assistance of invaded South Korea. Denmark, a country which during the years between 1940 and 1945 itself experienced foreign aggression and occupation, decided to sent a hospital ship, operated by the Danish Red Cross, to Korean waters.
The ship JUTLANDIA, a cargo vessel owned by the DANISH EAST ASIATIC COMPANY (Det Ostasiatiske Kompagni), was converted into a hospital ship on the company shipyard at Nakskov, Denmark, in 1950. The ship had room for 300 patients. It was equipped for helicopter landings. After serving in Korean waters for over 3 years, it returned to Denmark in 1954 and was again restored to the original state of a cargo and passenger vessel. In 1965 it was sold for scrap to Spain.

For the Danish personnel serving on the Jutlandia, specially printed paper currency, in Danish Kronor, were used. Here a 5 Kr note, illustration courtesy of   Steen Hartmann
