Norway 1884-1905 Norway 1914-1918

Norway, 1864-1914

Several reforms were enacted; Norway now had a government of it's own. Relations with Sweden remained strained, especially over Norway's demand to establish a separate CONSULAR SYSTEM. In August 1905, the Norwegians held a REFERENDUM over the issue of continuation of the union with Sweden; 368.392 voted for the dissolution of the union, 184 for upholding it.
In August/September 1905, negotiations with Sweden lead to a peaceful dissolution of the union. On Nov. 18th 1905, the Storting elected Danish prince Carl King of Norway; he took on the name Hakon. In 1913, UNIVERSAL SUFFRAGE was introduced, extending the right to vote to adult women.
