Norway 1969-1990

Norway continues to promote the peaceful solution of political conflicts. In 1993, the PLO and Israel signed the OSLO ACCORDS, negotiated in secret at the invitation of the Norwegian government.
In 1971 the Norwegian voters rejected the country's application for EEC membership, despite the fact that all major political parties had supported the move. The rejection caused not only the resignation of the Labour government under TRYGGVE BRATTELI, to be succeeded by a conservative cabinet under LARS KORSVALD, but also a shakeup of the political landscape : the Liberal Party split in two; Labour lost voters, the SOCIALIST ELECTORAL ASSOCIATION established itself as a new political force. Later the GREENS would join them.
High oil prices from 1973-1979 greatly benefitted Norway's economy, as it made offshore drilling more profitable. Norway rose to become the world's second largest oil exporter. Norway did not join OPEC and often raised its exports in order to prevent the oil price from rising too much, thud counteracting OPEC policy at that time. Norway's state-owned oil company STATOIL was founded in 1972.
Norway continued in developing as a WELFARE STATE. The combination of a large oil revenue and a low population made it affordable, taxation not rising to extreme figures as in neighbouring Sweden. Norway's unemployment is among the lowest in Europe.
Norway's economy depends heavily on the oil industry, merchant shipping and fishery. Norway continues the practice of WHALE HUNTING as there are little alternatives for the population living in the country's north - there, agriculture is not possible, and there are practically no other industries. Norwegian whale hunting continues to attract criticism from nature conservation activists.
In 1985, Norway signed the Schengen Agreement, abolishing controls at the border with Denmark and Sweden. The sport of boxing is prohibited in Norway. Norway's taxes on alcohol are the highest in Europe. The DEATH PENALTY was abolished in 1979.
