1969-1990

Norway since 1990

Following the collapse of communism, the Norwegian government, together with her counterparts in Sweden, Finland and Austria applied for EU membership, which was scheduled for 1995. However, the Norwegian populace rejected EU membership (1994), despite practically the entire political establishment advocating it; Norway is still member of EFTA, together with Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland.
Norway, since the 1970es, is an oil exporting nation. The wealth generated by the oil industry (Statoil) supports the Norwegian welfare state. Norway advocates the lifting of the ban (since 1987) on whale hunting.
In 1993 Palestinian and Israeli diplomats signed the Oslo Accord, an attempt to settle the Israeli-Palestinian dispute. Norway contributes contingents to peace keeping forces in a number of theatres; Norwegian diplomates mediate in the civil war on Sri Lanka.
