Sultanate of Brunei, 1918-1945



In 1929, OIL was discovered at SERIA. This made Brunei an attractive target for the Japanese, who occupied Brunei in World War II (1942-1945).

In 1931, the Sultanate of Brunei had 30,135 inhabitants, in 1937 34,016. The population of the capital was 10,453. In 1936 state expenses amounted to 90,944 Pound Sterling, state revenues to 108,347 Pound. Main import articles machinery (oil industry), tobacco; main export articles petrol, rubber. Because of the petrol Brunei had a very favourable trade balance.
