Cochinchina 1471-18th century



In 1471 Champa suffered a devastating defeat at the hand of Annam, losing its territory . The population of Champa emigrated into the area around Saigon. The region was called COCHIN CHINA, in and around the Mekong delta. Cochin China continued to recognize Cambodian (Khmer) sovereignty; Cambodia again was a Thai vassal. The new Champa state became vassal of Annam in 1697, the city of Saigon was founded in 1698, Champa annexed by Annam in 1720. Annam annexed the Mekong Delta in 1747.
