1981-1998

Indonesia after Suharto, since 1998

The Asian financial crisis of 1997 had hit Indonesia hard. The country in 1998 underwent democratization, as the Golkar Party was stripped of her privileges. East Timor, in a referendum, opted for independence (1999), was placed under UN administration. Indonesia faced separatist movements in Aceh and West Papua (Irian Jaya). Ethnic and/or religious violence erupted occasionally, in Maluku Selatan in 1999, in Kalimantan in 2001.
Since 1998, Indonesia's democracy has proven to be stable; the country has seen two changes in government based on election results. The conflict in Aceh was solved by negotiation and agreement (2005); West Papua (Irian Jaya) was granted autonomy in 2002.
Indonesia made headlines through the Bali bombings (2002, 2005) and the Tsunami of December 2004, which killed an estimated 220,000 on the west coast of Sumatra.
