Early Burmese state located in the central Irawaddy valley, capital Pagan. In 1044, Pagan established its supremacy over the Irawaddy delta region, which was inhabited by the Mon. In 1287, the capital of Pagan was conquered by the Mongols (China's Yuan Dynasty).
Pagan was Buddhist, the city referred to as the city of a thousand temples.
After the Mongol invasion, Pagan disintegrated into a Shan state in the north and a Mon state in the south.
