The Philippines since 2001


Administration . Since 1986 the Philippines is a functioning democracy. A military mutiny in 2003 was ended after negotiations. In 2001, President Estrada was impeached; he resigned and later was arrested, for corruption. He was succeeded by Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. General elections were held in 2004 and are scheduled to be held in 2007.

The Economy . Six Year Development Plans 1999-2004, 2005-2010.
Real GDP grew by 4.3 % in 2002, by 4.3 % in 2003 (StYB 2006) and by 5.4 % in 2006 (Wikipedia : Ec. of the Ph.).

Domestic Events . In October 2002, bombs detonated in Manila and Zamboanga. The truce with MILF broke down in February 2003; a new truce was agreed upon in July 2003. An army mutiny in July 2003 was resolved without bloodshed. The ceasefire with the MILF was broken in January 2005. In Nov.-Dec. 2005 there was a shootout between government forces and the Aby Sayyaf on Jolo island. In 2006 the death penalty was abolished.

Social History . The microcensus of 2000 counted 76.4 million Filipinos.

Cultural History . Philippine athletes participated in the Summer Olympics in Athens 2004. In 2005, Manila, together with other cities in the Philippines, hosted the 23rd Southeast Asian Games.
