Unfederated Malay States, 1909-1918

In 1909, Britain and the Kingdom of Siam signed a treaty according to which the latter renounced her rights of sovereignty over the Malay principalities of KELANTAN, TRENGGANU, PERLIS and KEDAH. In fact, prior to the treaty, Kelantan, Perlis and Kedah had been administrated by British officers in the service of the King of Siam. The 4 sultanates became British protectorates. Every Sultan was given a British advisor. In the case of Trengganu, which had not gone through modernization earlier as no Europeans had been involved in the administration, immediately major reform projects were undertaken. In 1914, the Sultan of JOHORE, traditionally on good terms with the British, formally signed a treaty placing his Sultanate under British protection. It thus became the 5th of the UMS.
The individual Sultanates retained a certain degree of political autonomy, as expressed in the stamps issued for each one of them.
