Unfederated Malay States, 1919-1939

During the 1920es and 1930es, the status of the five Unfederated Malay States (KEDAH, PERLIS, KELANTAN, TRENGGANU, JOHORE) remained unchanged. The individual states were British PROTECTORATES, with Britain in charge of foreign representation and defense, the Sultan in charge for domestic affairs. Yet the British ADVISOR was the most influential person in the respective Sultanate (INDIRECT RULE).
The UMS were home to a thriving RUBBER PLANTATION industry.
