Ternate Tidore
First posted on January 5th 2010, last revised on May 11th 2010

One of the Moluccan islands. A vassall state of Ternate which occasionally acted independently; in sources of the 17th to 19th century refered to as a kingdom.
The V.O.C. exercised much influence (deposed Kings of Ternate, Bacan in 1778), and "independence" was further diminished in the 19th century when the Dutch East Indies extended control. "World Statesmen" discontinues the list of Sultans of Bacan in 1917. The territory of the Sultanate of Bacan in 1949 was intergrated into the Republic of Indonesia.

Alternative spellings : Bacan, Batjan, Batsjan, Bachian, Batschian, Batchian, Bacquian, Bachiam
