The world's main suppliers of nutmeg and mace, the small group of the Banda Islands in the 17th century were of primary attraction for merchants from all over the world. The Portuguese arrived in 1612, the Dutch and English in the early 17th century. Disputes over a monopoly in the trade with Bandanese nutmeg snd mace resulted in conflicts in which the V.O.C prevailed, and much of the population massacred or deported (1621); Banda was to remain one of the company's most valuable possessions. In 1800, together with the other company assets, it became parts of the Dutch East Indies, in 1949 of the Republic of Indonesia.
