The Sultanate of Banten was established in 1527, gained independence around 1550. It took control of lands which previously had belonged to the Sultanate of Demak (on the north coast) and of lands which had belonged to the Hindu Sunda Kingdom of Pajajaran. Located at the Sunda Straits, the city of Banten emerged into an important trade center which was frequented by Portuguese, Dutch, English and French merchants. It remained independent until it was annexed by the British interim administration of Java in 1813. When the British returned their holdings on Java to Dutch rule in 1816, Banten became part of the territories of the Dutch East Indies. The territory of the Sultanate of Banten since 1945/1949 is part of the Republic of Indonesia.
