Located on the east coast of Kalimantan (Borneo); bordered in the north on Sambaliung,
in the south on Paser. The Hindu state of Kutai Martapura (5th to early 17th Century) was
annexed by another Hindu
kingdom, Kutai Kartanegara. From c.1732 the (Islamic) Sultanate of Kutai. Bugis from Sulawesi had considerable influence;
they made up a significant part of the armed force and are credited for the move of the capital from Kutai Lama
to Pemarangan in 1732, and in 1782 further upriver to Tenggarong. The city of Samarinda was established by Bugis in 1730.
The first Dutch visitor arrived in 1635 and signed a treaty with the Sultan, which was of as little consequence as the
"cession" of Kutai and Pasir to the V.O.C. by the Sultan of
Banjarmasin in 1787 and 1817. Only from 1844 onward can the Sultanate of Kutai be regarded a(n unruly) protectorate
of the Dutch East Indies. Kutai maintained a considerable degree of autonomy, more than most
protectorates of the Dutch East Indies. Kutai was regarded part of Bornero's Zuider- en Ooster-Afdeling.
