In 1846 the Sultanate of Brunei ceded the island of Labuan (regarded a pirate's nest) to Britain.
In 1848 Labuan became a crown colony. The island gained importance as a coaling station. In 1906 it joined the
Straits Settlements; in 1946 the latter were dissolved and Labuan was annexed into
British North Borneo. As part of the latter (Sabah), in 1963 it joined
