Literature on the History of South East Asia

Prior to the 14th century much of the territory of modern Laos formed part of the Khmer Empire. From 1353 to 1707 the region was under the control of the Kingdom of Lan Xang. In 1707 it was split in three, the Kingdoms of Luang Prabang, Viang Chan (Vientiane) and Champassak.
The period from 1707 to 1893 is called "the Dark Ages of Laos" (Wikipedia). European sources of the 18th and 19th century do refer to a Kingdom of Lawhos / Laos throughout the 18th and into the 19th century, and within the respective chapters often also refer to Lanjan / Lanjane; such sources are listed below.
