The Sultanate of Maguindanao is said by some sources to have been established at the end of the 12th century, by others in the eatly 1300s;
the more likely date is c.1515. The earlier dates probably refer to the establishment of a pre-Muslim rajahdom by that name.
Sultan Sharif Kabungsuwan, a native of Johor (died 1543) is said to have introduced
Islam in Mindanao. Maguindanao was a traditional ally of the Sultanate of Ternate; the royal houses intermarried.
In about 1668 the Sultanate of Maguindanao was partitioned in the Sultanates of (smaller) Maguindanao, Buayan,
Kabuntalan and Ganassi. It lasted until into the 19th century, when it was threatened by Spanish expansion. Following the
Philippine-American War 1899-1902, it was integrated in the Philippines as part of Moro Province. The center
of Maguindanao is Cotabato.
Alternative spellings : Maguindanao, Magindanao, Sultanate of Mindanao, Mindanoa, Melindenow, Magindano, Mindano Sources of the late 18th and early 19th century use the name Magindanao often in reference for the entire island of Mindanao, or vice versa, refer to the 'Sultanate of Mindanao' (meaning Maguindanao). |
