1963-1981
Administration . The Federation of Malaysia was formed in 1963, comprising of the Malaya Federation, Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah (North Borneo). In 1965, cooperation between Singapore and the Federal Government broke down and Singapore proclaimed independence.
Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Alhaj (UNMO) was PM from 1963 to 1970; Tun Abdul Razak bin Hussein (UNMO) held the position from 1970 to 1976, succeeded by Datuk Hussein bin Onn (1976-1981).
Foreign Policy . The Malayan Federation had been ademitted to the UN in 1957; in 1963 Malaysia took its place. From 1963 to 1965 Malaysia was targeted by Indonesia's Crush Malaysia Policy; the coup d'etat in Indonesia 1965 brought relief, as Sukarno's Konfrontasi policy lost steam. Malaysia in 1967 was a funding member of ASEAN. In 1973 Malaysia and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam established diplomatic relations.
Inter-Ethnic Relations . The population of Malaysia consists to about 52 % of ethnic Malays, mostly Muslim, of c. 30 % of descendants of Chinese immigrants, of c.8 % descendants of Indian (mostly Tamil Hindu) immigrants and of c.7 % of non-Malay inhabitants of Sabah and Sarawak.
Modern history of Malaysia is dominated by the contest between Malays and ethnic Chinese over who dominates the identity of the citizens of Malaysia. Singapore was "pushed out" of the federation, because the Chinese-majority city could tip the balance toward the Chinese side.
Politics in Malaysia is dominated by the UNMO (United Malays National Organization); most of Malaysia's ethnic Chinese are denied citizenship and treated as alien residents.
The UNMO did badly in the elections of 1969; the victorious opposition (many of them ethnic Chinese) paraded through a part of capital Kuala Lumpur inhabited by ethnic Malays. Malay-Chinese riots erupted in the course of which 196 persons were killed; the state of emergency was declared. It caused the government to pursue the New Economic Policy (1971-1990) which intended to tackle the degree of control Malaysia's ethnic Chinese held over the country's economy.
The Economy . In 1963, Malaysia produced 1.0 million metric tons of rice, in 1981 2.0 million metric tons (IHS p.200). In 1963 Malaysia produced 765,000 metric tons of rubber, in 1981 1,510,000 metric tons (IHS p.260), in both years holding the position of being the world's largest producer. In 1963 Malaya produced 60,900 metric tons of unrefined tin ore, in 1981 59,900 metric tons (IHS p.398). In 1963 Malaysia produced 85,000 metric tons of refined tin, in 1981 70,000 metric tons (IHS p.434).
In 1970 the New Economic Policy was launched, which aimed at integrating the Malay population element into a national economy largely controlled by the country's ethnic Chinese. Malaysia implemented Five Year Development Plans : the Second Malaysia Plan 1971-1975, Third Malaysia Plan 1976-1980, Fourth Malaysia Plan 1981-1985. The Second Malaysia Plan emphasized the integration of the ethnic Malay majority into a hitherto Chinese-dominated economy; from the Third Malaysia Plan onward, emphasis lay with the development of the overall economy. In 1974 Malaysia's national petrochemical company Petronas was established.
Social History . J. Lahmeyer gives the population of Malaysia in 1963 as 8.3 million, that of 1981 as 14.8 million. The population of Kuala Lumpur rose from 316,000 in 1957 to 919,000 in 1980.
Cultural History . TV broadcasting began in 1963. Malaysian athletes participated in the Summer Olympics of Tokyo 1964, Mexico City 1968, Munich 1972 and Montreal 1976. Malaysia boycotted the Summer Olympics at Moscow 1980.

1981-2003
Administration . From 1981 to 2003, Dato Seri Mahathir bin Mohamad (UNMO) held the post of PM. When deputy PM Anwar Ibrahim publicly criticized PM Mahathir Mohamad, in 1999 he was accused and convicted of corruption and sodomy, in a case which was widely regarded as politically motivated.
General elections were held in 1982, 1986, 1990, 1995 and 1999, the governing Barisan Coalition, consisting of UNMO, MCA and MIC, being victorious in all cases.
Foreign Policy . Malaysia continued to be a member of ASEAN, which expanded in the 1990es, taking in Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. ASEAN pursues the policy on not interfering in member countries' internal affairs; the rise of terrorism in Southeast Asia (Bali Bombings 2002), the East Timor Crisis 1999, the maltreatment of ethnic minorities in Myanmar causing the exodus of refugees (since 1978/1984, in progress) are partially blamed on ASEAN's inaction.
Malaysia's PM Mahathir Mohamad was an outspoken critic of Israel. Malaysia did not participate in the international effort to oust Iraqi troops from occupied Kuwait, and did not join the Coalition of the Willing in 2003 either.
The Economy Malaysia implemented Five Year Development Plans : the Fourth Malaysia Plan 1981-1985, Fifth Malaysia Plan 1986-1990, Sixth Malaysia Plan 1991-1995, Seventh Malaysia Plan 1996-2000, Eighth Malaysia Plan 2001-2005. From the Third Malaysia Plan onward, emphasis lay with the development of the overall economy. The country's infrastructure (roads, mass transportation, education, health care) were developed to reach international standard. Malaysia aims at attracting tourism and provides residence for retirees from advanced nations. Under the Mahathir administration, Malaysia was among the world's fastest developing nations. From 1970 to 1997, the GNP increased tentold; the poverty rate dropped from 52 to 7 %.
Originally, rubber and tin were the backbones of Malaysia's economy. The development plans succeeded in establishing new industries, such as palm oil production and electronics industries, which became the country's main revenue earners.
This development paralleled a decline in the country's traditional industries. Malaysia's rice production stagnated around 1.8 to 2.1 million metric tons annually (IHS p.200). It lost the position of Asia's leading producer of rubber to Indonesia in 1991, and dropped to the Asia's third largest producer in 1992 (IHS p.260).
Malaysian production of tin ore dropped dramatically, from 59,900 metric tons in 1981 to 5,800 metric tons in 1999 (IHS p.398), its production of refined tin dropped from 70,000 metric tons in 1981 to 28,000 metric tons in 1999 (IHS p.434).
Malaysia joined WTO in 1995.
In the course of the 1997 East Asian Financial Crisis, the exchange rate for the Malaysian Ringgit to the U.S. Dollar dropped from 2.50 to 3.80 and caused the country to enter a brief recession. Malaysia, the economy of which, at the time of the crisis, was in a boom to a considerable extent financed by foreign capital, was by comparison hit less hard than fellow ASEAN members Indonesia and Thailand.
Social History . J. Lahmeyer estimates the population of Malaysia in 1981 as 14.1 million; the census of 2001 counted 23.2 million Malaysians.
Cultural History . In 1998 the Petronas Towers were completed, until 2004 the world's tallest building. In 1999 the Malaysian Grand Prix was added to the Formula One car racing tour. Kuala Lumpur hosted the Southeast Asian Games in 1989 and 2001. Malaysian athletes participated in the Summer Olumpics at Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000. A silver medal by Malaysia's men's doubles badminton team in Atlanta 1996 was the greatest Olympic success of Malaysia's athletes so far.

since 2003
Administration . From 2003 to 2009 the post of PM was held by Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi (UNMO), since 2009 by Najib Razak (UNMO). Barisan Nasional, a coalition of UNMO, MCA and MIC, won the general elections of 2004, 2008, 2013; presently, Anwar Ibhahim leads the opposition.
Social History . The census of 2001 counted 23.2 million Malaysians. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami caused 68 deaths in Malaysia.
