Srivijaya Sailendra
First posted on January 10th 2010, last revised on May 10th 2010

The Hindu-Buddhist Kingdom of Mataram on Java is dated from 732 to 1045. Its climax was the period between 732 and 928, a period in which it was ruled by the Sanjaya Dynasty. It competed with the Sailendra Dynasty (the constructors of Borobudur); in 852 Mataram conquered the Sailendra Kingdom in Central Java. To the west, Mataram bordered on Srivijaya, which held Western Java.
In the 10th century the decline of Mataram began, which was intensified by a major eruption of Mount Merapi, which covered Borobudur with ashes. Airlingga restored the Kingdom of Mataram, changed the name to Kahuripan, and in 1045 split it among his sons, one of whom received the Kingdom of Kediri, the other the Kingdom of Janggala.
