From the mid 17th century to 1853, Pahang was part of the domains of the Sultans of Johor. Since 1853 a separate political entity; joined the Federated Malay States in 1895, after the Japanese occupation 1942-1945 joined the Federation of Malaya in 1946, Malaysia in 1963.
