Pattani from the 13th century to 1569 was a vassall state first of the Kingdom of Sukhothai, then of
Ayutthaya. It was an important
trading center visited by Chinese, Portuguese (since 1516), Japanese, Dutch (since 1602) merchants. In 1569 the Sultanate of
