Oolong Salang, by Westerners referred to as Junk Ceylon, in Thai Phuket. A trade center frequented by Portuguese, Dutch, French, English merchants. In the 18th century a part of Thailand. In the 1780es the E.I.C. considered Junk Ceylon as a potential acquisition. In 1785 Burmese forces failed in the attempt to take Phuket, in 1825 they temporaily occupied the island.
As a trade center and an island community involved in mining, the composition of the population was complex and diverse; the mining industry was dominated by the Chinese, trade mainly by Muslim merchants.
The conflict between Thailand and Burma made Phuket an insecure place, while the E.I.C. was able to guarantee merchants a safe environment at Penang (since 1786), Malacca (E.I.C. possession since 1824) and Singapore (since 1819), so the importance of Phuket as a trade center declined.

Alternative spellings : Junkceylon, Junk Ceylon, Junçalaon, Junkseylon, Jonsalem, Jonkceyloan, Jonkceylon
