Historically, the Archipelago of Riau-Lingga and the territory of Indragiri (on Sumatra's east coast) were poart of the Sultanate of
Johor. In 1819, the Sultanate of Riau-Lingga was split off from Johor.
The Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824 established of the (mainland) Sultanate of Johor
as part of the British sphere of interest, and the Sultanate of Riau as part of the Dutch sphere of interest. Direct Dutch administration was
established in 1911, the Sultanate formally abolished in 1913, annexed into the Dutch East Indies. Within the Republic of Indonesia, the former Sultanate of Riau, enlarged by territory from the former Sultanate of Siak, was established as Riau Province. In 2004, the Riau Islands were separated from Riau Province and turned into a province of their own. Capital Tanjung Pinang. |
