Historically the territory of Sarawak State used to belong to the Sultanate of Brunei.
In 1842 Briton James Brooke, for services to the Sultan, was appointed hereditary Raja of Sarawak. The territory under the
Brooke Dynasty expanded (reducing the territory of the Sultan of Brunei to a fragment of its former extension).
De facto, the Rajadom of Sarawak was a British protectorate. After several years of Japanese occupation (1942-1945), Charles Vyner Brooke in 1946 ceded his family's rights to the British government, and Sarawak became a crown colony. The thinly populated Sarawak was threatened by Indonesia's Konfrontasi Policy (1962-1963). In 1963, Sarawak, North Borneo, Singapore and the Federation of Malaya joined to form Malaysia.
